the Severn Bridges [the Severn Bridges]
two high ↑suspension bridges (= bridges that hang from cables supported by towers at each end) which carry motorways over the river ↑Severn near Bristol between south-west England and south Wales. The first Severn Bridge was built in the 1960s and now carries the M48 motorway. The newer Severn Bridge was built in the 1990s and now carries the M4 motorway. They are both toll bridges (= you have to pay to use them).
